Canada is one of the world’s top destinations for international students, offering world-class education, cultural diversity, and a pathway to permanent residence. But before you can study here, you’ll likely need a Study Permit, which acts as your legal authorization to study in Canada for more than 6 months.
A Study Permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada.
A Study Permit is not a visa. Most students will also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or eTA to enter Canada.
You need a study permit if:
Your program is longer than 6 months
You are a foreign national studying in Canada
You are not already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
You do not need a study permit if:
Your program is 6 months or less
You’re a family member of foreign diplomats
You’re part of certain short-term military programs
From a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada
Must include details like program start and end dates
Letter of acceptance from a DLI
Proof of funds (tuition + living expenses)
Valid passport
Passport-size photo
Immigration forms: IMM 1294, IMM 5645, etc.
Medical exam (if required)
Police certificate (if requested)
Create an IRCC account and apply online
Pay application fee: $150 CAD
At a local Visa Application Centre (VAC)
Processing time: typically 4–12 weeks, varies by country
