Study Permits & International Students in Canada

Canada is one of the world’s top destinations for international students, offering world-class education, cultural diversity, and a pathway to permanent residence. But before you can study here, you’ll likely need a Study Permit, which acts as your legal authorization to study in Canada for more than 6 months.

What Is a Study Permit?

A Study Permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada.

A Study Permit is not a visa. Most students will also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or eTA to enter Canada.

You need a study permit if:

  • Your program is longer than 6 months

  • You are a foreign national studying in Canada
