Canada understands the importance of family unity. That’s why it offers the Super Visa, a long-term multiple-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to stay in Canada for extended periods — up to 5 years at a time per visit.
The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa valid for up to 10 years that allows eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to:
Visit Canada multiple times without reapplying
Stay in Canada for up to 5 years per visit (as of 2022 update)
This makes it ideal for extended family visits and caregiving support, especially for those who don’t qualify under the annual Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship PR lottery.
To qualify, the applicant must be:
The parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Outside Canada at the time of application
Medically admissible to Canada
Covered by private medical insurance (Canadian-based) for at least 1 year
Dependents (e.g., siblings, children) are not eligible under this program.
Provide a written letter of invitation
Prove they meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirements for the family size
Gather documents:
Letter of invitation from your child/grandchild
Proof of family relationship (e.g., birth certificate)
Proof of income from the sponsor (e.g., NOA)
Medical insurance policy
Completed IMM 5257 application form
Apply online through the IRCC portal
Pay the visa application fee: approx. $100 CAD
Biometrics and medical exam (if required)
Await decision
Typically 2–6 weeks, depending on country of origin
While the Super Visa is a fantastic opportunity, approval isn’t guaranteed. Your application must meet specific financial, insurance, and medical requirements — and that’s where I come in.
